About Register.com
Peter Forman established Forman Interactive Corporation in 1994, later renaming it Register.com, with the intention of providing its customers with website-creation software. The company was going to shift its focus over the next five years towards providing services related to domain name registration and web hosting. In 1999, the company’s leaders came to the conclusion that these offerings would make up such a significant portion of the business that they should rebrand the company as Register.com.
Over fifty different products are currently available to the company’s clientele in New York City, where the company’s headquarters are located. It is responsible for the management of more than 2.9 million domain names and provides services to hundreds of thousands of clients.
In 2010, Web.com completed the acquisition of the company.
Pros and cons of Register.com
Every web host has both benefits and drawbacks. In some cases, the advantages may outweigh the disadvantages, but in others, certain disadvantages may be a deal breaker.
Before making a final decision, consider the advantages and disadvantages of using Register.com.
Let’s start with the advantages.
Pros
- Backup: Although this is a standard feature for some hosting companies, it appears to be lacking in many others. Register.com not only backs up your site, but also gives you access to a feature called File Restore. File Restore allows you to roll back the version of your site to erase any mistakes. We thought it was a little shortsighted that it only kept your data for the last three days, but the fact that they had it at all was a plus.
- Customer support: Register.com excels in this area. They offer phone and email support 24/7. Although they don’t have live chat, we found that every time we called – and we called several times a day – we got a competent support representative on the phone. This is significant because of the business trend of putting people on hold for long periods of time in order to reach a live support agent.
- FTP access: FTP access is no longer provided by many hosting companies. Although this is a more technical solution, it also provides more flexibility and customization. FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol, is an Internet standard. This protocol allows you to transfer files of any type between your computer and their server for complete customization.
- Moneyback guarantee: Register.com provides a 30-day money-back guarantee, but it excludes premium domain names and hosting services. However, this guarantee does not cover many of their offerings, on the other hand, Register.com is one of the few companies that offers monthly billing at the shared hosting level.
Cons
- Chargeable site building tool: Every other hosting provider that offers tools to simplify your Web development experience does so for free. Register.com charges a fee for its website-creation tools. It almost feels like register.com is trying to nickel and dime you, extracting every last penny from you. WordPress provides better site-building tools with free templates. Furthermore, WordPress is more user-friendly, yet Register.com insists on charging you for a tool that every other hosting provider provides for free.
- Extra expensive: Given that register.com was one of the first Web registrars, this one comes as a bit of a surprise. GoDaddy is currently the most popular Web registrar on the internet. Many other hosting companies replicate GoDaddy’s registration feature. Go Daddy, on the other hand, charges only $14.99 to register your domain name. Register.com charges $35 per year for a dot-com address, a 250 percent increase over the most popular registrar on the internet. This is extremely important because many people use Web hosting providers to park domains. A 250 percent increase in domain registration will quickly add up, making register.com one of the worst places to register and park domains.
- Extra charges for e-mail: This is when we realised it was a little ridiculous. Every other hosting company offers email hosting as part of the website hosting package. Not only do these two features exist separately on Register.com, but if you want to manage your email, you must log in to a different portal using a different set of credentials than you do for your website. None of the three hosting plans include a single email address. They may try to make it more affordable by offering a webmail portal with 5MB of storage for $9.99 per year, but their most expensive package with 10 mailboxes and 100MB of storage costs up to $99.99 per year. Email is not a commodity that can be sold in this manner; even Google offers domain-customized email with ten times as many features at a lower cost.
- Confusing sales pages: When you see a headline that says, “We will build your website for free,” it’s definitely worth investigating. Who wouldn’t want to take advantage of such a service? The problem is that the fine print clearly states that you will be charged $94.95 per month for this service. Even the most expensive hosting plan costs less than $30 per month, so which one is it? Will they build your website for free or charge you close to $100 per month?
Register.com Performance
When choosing a web host, cost is frequently the most important factor to consider, but performance should never be overlooked.
As a result, we decided to conduct our own tests in order to conduct a thorough analysis of Register.com’s performance.
Register.com Speed Test Results:
One of the most important metrics to consider when looking for important performance metrics is speed. A faster website not only improves user experience, but it also improves your website’s search engine optimisation.
A one-second delay, for example, can result in a 15% decrease in customer satisfaction, a 6% decrease in conversions, and a 10% decrease in page views. All of these changes can occur in a single second.
Pingdom’s website speed testing tool was used to assess the performance of our tests. As a result of the circumstances, we obtained the following results:
As you can see, it loaded in 2.81 seconds.
Register.com Plans and features
Register.com provides a variety of hosting plans from which to choose. There are general-purpose shared hosting plans, but some of their offerings include web hosting as well.
Shared Hosting:
Register.com provides three separate shared hosting plans.
The Essential Hosting Plan is the most affordable hosting plan, and it includes 300 GB of storage and unlimited data transfer. You will also receive a free domain name, up to ten email inboxes, twenty-five FTP accounts, and twenty-five MySQL databases. (300 MB max).
The Professional Hosting Plan, which is priced in the middle, includes 500 GB of storage and unlimited data transfer. In addition, you will receive a free domain name, up to 25 email inboxes, 50 FTP accounts, and 50 MySQL databases. (300 MB max).
The top-tier Premium Hosting Plan includes unlimited storage and data transfer. In addition, you will receive a free domain name, up to 25 email inboxes, and an unlimited number of FTP accounts and MySQL databases.
All options include either a Unix or a Windows operating system. Register.com, unlike many other hosts, does not charge a premium for Windows hosting.
Register.com Customer Support and Service
Register.com provides technical support by phone or email in the Eastern time zone of the United States.
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 a.m.
Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The company guarantees to respond to all inquiries within 24-48 hours.
Register.com has some FAQ pages and a basic knowledgebase, but we found them to be spartan and of little help beyond the basics.
Bottom Line
In the best case scenario, Register.com takes advantage of people’s lack of knowledge. Their web hosting may be dependable, and they may provide excellent customer service to go along with it; however, they charge an extremely high price for their services, and they do not provide essential features, such as email, that ought to be included with every hosting package.
